Toll prices access to the apps that take your day. You earn tokens by doing things worth doing, and opening a tolled app costs tokens.

Getting started

What is a toll?

A price, in tokens, for opening an app you chose to limit. You set which apps. You earn the tokens by completing tasks you set for yourself.

Toll is not a blocker — you can always get through by paying. That is the point: it makes opening a distracting app a decision rather than a reflex.

Why does Toll need Screen Time permission?

Placing a barrier in front of an app requires Apple's Screen Time frameworks, and those require your explicit permission. iOS shows you its own prompt; Toll cannot grant it on your behalf and cannot work without it.

Why can't Toll show me the names of the apps I picked?

Because Apple does not tell us.

When you choose apps, Apple hands the app a sealed reference instead of a name, a bundle ID, or an icon. This is a property of the framework, not a choice we made. When Toll displays your selected apps it asks iOS to draw them — the app itself never learns what they are.

The upside: we could not tell anyone which apps you limit, because we do not know.

Everyday questions

How do I stop tolling an app?

Toll → Settings → Tolled apps → tap the picker → deselect. The barrier lifts immediately. Deleting the app also removes every barrier.

I ran out of tokens and I need that app now

Three ways through:

  1. Complete a task. It pays out immediately once matured.
  2. Use your weekly free pass. Offered on the barrier screen when available.
  3. Deselect the app in Settings → Tolled apps.

You are never locked out. If a task will not clear because it has not matured yet, the maturation delay is adjustable with premium, or you can deselect the app.

My tokens disappeared overnight

Unspent tokens expire at 03:00 by design. Yesterday's discipline does not fund today's scrolling — that is what keeps the loop daily rather than letting a big Sunday bankroll a whole week.

Premium lets you set a carry-over cap so some tokens survive the reset.

The session ended earlier than I expected

A session ends on whichever comes first: the minutes of actual use you paid for, or a wall-clock window that gives you extra time to spend them in.

The ledger tells you which happened. A row reading "Session ended · window closed" means the clock ran out before you used all your minutes.

My Health-verified task shows zero

Two possibilities, and unfortunately the app cannot tell them apart.

Apple does not tell apps whether permission to read Health data was granted or refused — that is deliberate on Apple's part, so an app cannot infer a health fact from a refusal. A refusal and a real zero look identical to us, which is why Toll never claims your access was denied.

Check Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Toll and confirm the figures you expect are switched on.

Also note that hand-entered Health samples are ignored — typed-in step counts cannot earn tokens. That is deliberate: measured tasks pay the most precisely because they are the ones you cannot assert.

Do my photos go anywhere?

No. A photo attached to a task is saved in the app's own private storage. It is not added to your photo library, never uploaded, and never seen by anyone but you. Deleting the app deletes it.

Purchases

What does premium include?

The free version tolls two apps, allows three tasks a day, offers stated and photo verification, and keeps a week of ledger history.

Premium removes those limits, adds timed and Health-verified tasks, opens the economy rules to editing, and keeps the full ledger. Available monthly, yearly, or as a one-time lifetime purchase.

What is the 14-day trial?

New installs get 14 days with premium features enabled. It requires no payment method and charges nothing. When it ends, the app returns to the free tier — your history stays visible, it is not confiscated.

How do I restore a purchase?

Toll → Settings → Premium → Restore purchases. Use the same Apple Account you bought with.

Note that restoring recovers your entitlement, not your data. Toll does not sync between devices.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Subscriptions are managed by Apple, not by us:

Settings app → your name → Subscriptions → Toll → Cancel.

We cannot cancel one for you. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Apple under Apple's policies. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com. We have no ability to grant or refuse a refund.

Privacy

What leaves my phone?

Two things only:

  • Purchase status, handled by RevenueCat, so the app knows whether you have premium
  • Four anonymous counts — app opened, trial started, purchase completed, purchase restored — sent to analytics we host ourselves

The second carries no device identifier, nothing about which apps you limit, no Health data, and no screen time data. You can switch it off in Settings → About.

Your tasks, balance, ledger and photos never leave the device.

Full detail: privacy

Is there an account?

No. No sign-up, no login, no password, no email address. Nothing to delete but the app itself.

Can I use Toll on my child's phone, or my partner's?

No. Toll has no accounts, no pairing, and no remote configuration. It affects only the device it runs on, configured by the person holding it. There is no way to apply it to someone else's phone or to see what they do.

Troubleshooting

The barrier did not appear

  • Confirm the app is still selected in Settings → Tolled apps
  • Confirm Screen Time permission is still granted: Settings → Screen Time → Apps with Screen Time Access
  • Restart the device — iOS occasionally needs it after permission changes

The app will not open past the first screen

Force-quit and reopen. If it persists, email us with your iPhone model and iOS version.

I lost my data after changing phones

Toll is single-device by design and does not sync. Tasks, balance and ledger live only on the device that created them, and we have no copy to restore. Purchases can be restored; data cannot.

This is a known limitation, not a bug, and it follows from having no accounts and no server.

Requirements

iPhone running iOS 17 or later. iPhone only — there is no iPad version.
