A tollbooth for your phone

Toll puts a price on the apps that take your day.

You earn tokens by doing things that matter. Opening a tolled app costs tokens. When you run out, the barrier comes down. It is not a blocker. You can always get through. You just have to have paid for it first.

Not a blocker

Blockers are switched off in a moment of weakness. A toll is paid or it is not. The barrier never argues with you, it quotes a price.

Not a streak

No leaderboard, no chain to protect, no notification designed to pull you back. Toll does not praise you for clearing a task and does not shame you for buying an hour.

Not a service

No account, no sign-up, no server. Your tasks, your ledger and your balance live on this phone and stay there.

How it works

Plan a few things worth doing. Clear them. Pay to scroll.

A day in Toll has four moves, in this order. The numbers below are the shipped defaults. Premium opens them to editing.

Plan before 11:00

Write down a few tasks for the day and pick how each one will be proven. The planning window closes at 11:00 so tasks are set before the day gets away.

Payout per task 5 to 30 tokens

Clear them, they pay out

Mark a task done and its tokens land in your balance. A payout matures for 30 minutes before it can be spent, so a task cannot be cleared and cashed in the same breath.

Daily earning ceiling 90 tokens

Open a tolled app, pay the quote

Pick the apps you want to limit. Open one and the barrier quotes you a price for the minutes you want. Pay it and the app opens for exactly that long.

Base rate 1 token per minute, blocks of 5

Unspent tokens expire at 03:00

Yesterday's discipline does not fund today's scrolling. The balance resets overnight and the rate ladder starts again from the bottom.

Carry-over none

The rate

The first session is cheap. The fourth one is not.

The rate escalates within a day: 1×, 1.25×, 1.5×, then 2× for every session after that. It prices binges without punishing ordinary use. Try a quote.

Four ways to prove it

Measured tasks pay best because they are the only ones you cannot simply assert.

Every task carries a verification method. The harder it is to fake, the more it pays.

Free

Stated

Say it happened. It pays the base rate. Toll takes your word, and records that it did.

Base rate
Free

Photo

Attach a photo. It pays the same as stated. The photo is for you, not for us. It never leaves the phone.

Base rate
Premium

Timed

Run a timer while you work. Leaving the app pauses it. Pays more than a stated task.

Pays more
Premium · Health

Measured

Let Health confirm the steps, the workout, the mindful minutes or the stand hours. Pays the most, and it is the only kind that escapes the daily earning ceiling.

Pays most, no ceiling

The ledger

Every token earned, spent and expired is written down.

With the time and the reason. Nothing is summarised away, nothing is hidden behind a score. If you bought an hour at 2× on Tuesday night, Tuesday night says so.

On Sunday it adds up into a receipt: what the week cost, and what paid for it. Share it as an image if you like. It is 1080 by 1920, and it names no apps, because Toll never knows them.

What it does not do

We could not see your app list if we wanted to.

Toll is built on Apple's Screen Time permissions, which you grant explicitly and can revoke any time in Settings. What the system hands over is a sealed token, not a name or an icon.

  • No account, no sign-up, no serverThere is nothing to log in to. Deleting the app deletes the database, the photos and the shared container. That is the whole deletion process.
  • No knowledge of which apps you pickedApple's picker returns an opaque token. Toll cannot read the names, bundle ids or icons of the apps it tolls, not even for its own screens.
  • No Health data stored or sentA measured task reads one figure, compares it with the target, and discards it. Toll writes nothing back to Health.
  • No tracking, no advertising identifierToll never asks permission to track because it does not. Analytics is four anonymous events, off by a switch in Settings, and the switch is honoured on the very next event.

The screens

Glass over a slow mesh, in both appearances.

Eight screens, the same in English, French, Spanish and Arabic. Dynamic Type and right-to-left layouts are first-class, not afterthoughts.

Every new install gets 14 days of Premium. No card, no prompt, no subscription to cancel. When it ends, the app keeps working on the free tier and the paywall stays out of your way until you go looking for it.

Prices shown in US dollars. Your local price appears in the App Store and on the paywall before you buy. Subscriptions renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the period and are managed in your Apple account settings. Tokens are an in-app accounting unit with no cash value and cannot be bought.

Questions

The things people ask before they install.

Can I just switch it off when I want to scroll?

You can always get through, that is the point. But you get through by paying tokens you earned, or by using your one free pass a week. Revoking Screen Time permission in Settings also removes the barrier entirely. Toll is a tool for you, not a lock someone else holds.

Is this a parental control app?

No. Toll is a self-control tool for its own user. It has no remote configuration, no second account, and no way for another person to see or set anything.

Which apps can I toll?

Any app or category Apple's Screen Time picker offers. The free tier covers two apps, Premium has no limit. Toll never learns which ones you chose.

Can I buy tokens with money?

No. Tokens are earned only by clearing tasks. Premium changes the limits of the app, never the balance.

What happens to my data if I delete the app?

It is gone. There is no account and no server copy. Tasks, the ledger, photos and the shared container all live inside the app on your phone.

Does it work on iPad or Android?

Toll is iPhone only, on iOS 17 or later. It depends on Apple's Screen Time framework, which has no equivalent elsewhere.

Why 03:00 and not midnight?

Because a day does not end at midnight for most people. Expiring at 03:00 lets a late evening finish as one day and starts the new ladder while you sleep. Premium lets you move the hour.
